My bio is not very complicated, but for myself I feel I am blessed. I started out working as a writer/journalist at The Nation newspaper in Bangkok right after my graduation and immediately got hooked by the profession. While my friends took a job as secretary or even air-stewardress, I roamed the city interviewing staggering numbers of important figures of the time. I covered entertainment news and shuffled my time interrogating hard news and converted them into fun features. I also briefly did some financial/banking news when it was piping hot – during the time when Thailand was jumping into the cruel sea of capitalism and later drowned. I was so in love with my career that I asked my father two years later to continue my studies in Journalism in the US.
Back then, it was quite unheard of for someone to seriously pursue an MA in Journalism. I mean, I didn’t think much, then. I just looked at the brochure of University of Oregon in a small hippy town of Eugene, their quiet Willamette River and the long bike paths around it and planned, in my head, the purchase of a good mountain bike – the vehicle that would allow me to do one thing that I could not even think of in Bangkok – riding a bike to school. That’s all in my head when I applied, but the result was a lot more.
After finishing my MA in Journalism, I did a stint as a technical writer at NSRC who allowed me to publish one book about the history of the Internet in Thailand. I came back home in 1998 and began working on a freelance basis ever since. And after a series of themes, beats, or whatever you call it in Journalism, I found myself most happy when describing and researching about food & lifestyle & people – getting human stories as I go along in my career. That’s what I call being blessed.. enjoying every bit of my works and actually earn enough money to carry on with life.

Hey Sirin,
I just picked up a book on food in Trang and Phuket and realised that you’re the author! A writer friend and I are planning on going to Trang later this month to do a feature piece on the food there. Would you be willing to grab lunch with us (your choice) sometime soon so we can pick your brain about eats there? I’m somewhat familiar with the town and its food, but it’s been several years since I’ve been back and I would love to get some tips. Please get back to me via email.
Cheers,
Austin
Hi Sirin,
Turns out you did make a good choice in pursuing MA-Journalism. I wasn’t so lucky, went down the cliche path of engineering and lost myself. Anyhow, I was wondering if you could come down for a talk at a small workshop we’re doing for sustainability and nutrition in Bangkok. Please revert through email so we can talk more.
