A member of the Luxury Collection Hotel, Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit near Asoke intersection is a great venue for both business and pleasures. Even though you are not meaning to go there and stay a night, their arrays of buffets at the bright Orchid Cafe featuring a good variety of international dishes, seafood, grill station, roasted beef, lots of green salads, appetizers (Thai, Japanese, Western as well as a good selection of hummus) can be a wonderful daytime destination for those looking for a hearty option either for lunch or dinner.

And now that if you are a member of their Starwood Preferred Guest® (SPG®) loyalty programme, apart from the regular discounts, you can enjoy the “DINE & SAVE: A DELICIOUS COMEBACK” campaign that runs from today until end of December during which the members, apart from the regular 15% off from their buffet meals, will get the coupon that gives them yet another 15% discount on top when they return and dine again in January 2014. That means, a whopping 30% discount just for this special occasion.

We went there on an invitation for a buffet lunch one Saturday. The Saturday lunch is not their grandest offering, but a grand one anyway. Featuring tables full of foods, with highlights on fresh assorted seafood with Alaskan crab claws, Australian blue mussels, Thai river prawns and rock lobsters as well as a grill station that freshly grills more prawns, lamb cutlets and satay on skewers, the buffet seem to please big families who do not want to bother ordering dishes to please every one. The bright airy space of Orchid Cafe that overlooks the bustling Sukhumvit street and BTS line is also a plus. You feel the comfort and plushness of the hotel, yet still be very connected to the busy, bustling and heavily polluted world outside on this particular stretch. If a meal is a sanctuary, this place is a nice and convenient option.

Hotel buffets have a standard that those frequenting such meal will feel accommodated to. You roam around once with an empty plate and then you pick on a couple of things that appeal to you best just to sample. You can either start by a plate of sushi and fresh Japanese rolls or you can start with a plate or two of assorted salads and appetizers. Here, choices are amazing and it is best to plan ahead on what to eat. We tried very hard to try them all, taking one small bite of each different thing, and still we couldn’t sample it all without our bellies exploding. My advice, if you will, is to stay on what you like best. I love their creamy hummus and crispy pita bread, their seafood selections, their fresh grilled prawns (though quite tasteless unless you ladle them with the provided sauce), their roasted beef was also lovely, and their sushi station was also good. Do not forget to keep room for the dessert. I particularly enjoyed their Thai sweet selections – bananas in syrup served with coconut cream, candied dates and fresh mangoes made a fulfilling finish to this nice meal.
